FSSAI proposes ban on adding sucrose and fructose in foods for infants up to six months

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed amending the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020, to prohibit adding sucrose and fructose to foods intended for infants up to six months of age. Under the existing regulation, sucrose and fructose are permitted when needed as a carbohydrate source, provided their combined amount does not exceed 20% of total carbohydrates.

The proposed amendment would remove this exception for the specified age group. The draft has been issued for public consultation, allowing stakeholders to submit objections or suggestions before the amendment is finalised.
