Botanical ingredient products: FSSAI's advisory on mandatory labelling and caution statements

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory for businesses dealing health supplements and nutraceuticals to comply with mandatory labelling requirements for products containing plant and botanical ingredients or their extracts.

Under the Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Food and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016, labels must identify the plant part used and carry the applicable cautionary statements. For example, neem leaf products must carry the prescribed warning against use by men and women planning to conceive.
