Punjab intensifies crackdown on unauthorised pregabalin sales amid tighter regulatory controls

Punjab’s Health Department reportedly plans to intensify inspections of chemist shops to curb the unauthorised sale of pregabalin amid concerns over its misuse and dependence. In September 2024, the state had restricted the sale and stocking of pregabalin formulations exceeding 75 mg. Subsequent enforcement action between April 2025 and August 2026 included seizures and the suspension and cancellation of licences. Separately, the Centre has notified pregabalin under Schedule H1, effective 12 November 2026, introducing stricter prescription, recordkeeping and labelling requirements. Pharmaceutical distributors and pharmacies should review their compliance processes and prepare for enhanced regulatory scrutiny.
